Southern Rhone Reds
Wines included
Saint-Gervais Les Rouvières Côtes-du-Rhône Villages, Domaine Sainte-Anne 2020
Sweet, ripe fruit flavours abound in this fabulous 2020. Sainte-Anne was among the first to plant the mourvèdre grape successfully here. Modestly priced yet capable of achieving great complexity with age. Drink from 2024 to 2033. 14%
Côtes-du-Rhône Villages, Notre Dame des Cellettes, Domaine Sainte-Anne 2020
Domaine Sainte-Anne is one of the remarkable estates in the southern Rhône. The Stenmaiers, originally from Burgundy, were pioneers, introducing both syrah and mourvèdre to the area. Both are used here, though the majority is grenache. Full-flavoured and rich with lovely soft fruit, made from 40-year-old vines.
Côtes-du-Rhône Villages Valreas, Clos Bellane 2019
This is full, fruity and concentrated Côtes-du-Rhône. Clos Bellane have become a major player in Valreas having bought Romain Bouchard's estate. They also have vines in the same area, on the plateau off the road to Vinsobres and set among fields of lavender.
Signargues Côtes-du-Rhône Villages, Domaine la Montagnette 2022
Rather splendid, joyfully galumphing Rhône red from a brilliant spot near the Pont du Gard where syrah, in particular, shines. Full and quite round, not to mention plummy with a touch of spice.
Signargues, Côtes-du-Rhône Villages, Domaine de Pierredon 2022
From a fine co-operative at Estézargues, a stone`s throw away from the Pont du Gard, this is understandably popular. About half the blend is syrah, and the result is dense, full and spicy. Drink from 2023 to 2029. 14.5%
Séguret Côtes-du-Rhône Villages Tradition, Domaine de Mourchon 2022
Gorgeous, ripe-tasting, grenache-dominated blend from a hill-side vineyard above the pretty village of Seguret. A wine of easy charm, and perfect with grilled meats.
